While the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD offer the same two engines, these workhorses differ in terms of towing and payload capacity. When equipped with the standard gas-powered V8, the Sierra 2500HD provides a maximum towing capacity of 17,370 pounds, as well as a payload rating that tops out at 3,979 pounds. Step up to the Duramax® turbodiesel engine for up to 18,510 pounds of towing capacity and a payload capacity of 3,715 pounds.
If you go with the 3500HD model’s standard 6.6-liter gas-powered V8, your truck will offer up to 17,200 pounds of towing and 4,481 pounds of payload capacity. Need to haul heavier cargo in the truck bed? Choose a dually configuration for up to 16,800 pounds of towing and 7,442 pounds of payload.
For even more power, go with the Duramax® turbodiesel engine. On a single-rear-wheel model, this dynamo provides you with 21,500 pounds of maximum towing capacity and the ability to haul up to 4,217 pounds of payload. If you opt for a dual-rear-wheel model you’ll be able to tow up to 36,000 pounds or haul a maximum of 6,523 pounds.
